Allahu Akbar and 9.0

Never in my lifetime did I expect to see my country so vulnerable. Irresponsible leadership has brought our economy to its knees. Our country is in two wars, a third is in the winds. And we are a house divided.

What is going on?

There is rioting in the streets of France, Greece and Great Britain. Governments in the middle east are dropping like flies, and the Muslim Brotherhood is setting up camp all around Israel. 1 million Haitians made homeless and starving by a catastrophic 7.0 earthquake. Japan has been decimated by a 9.0 quake, the strongest to hit her in a thousand years. A tsunami followed, triggering a massive power grid failure, which now threatens a nuclear meltdown.

Where is God in all of this?

Jesus said in Matthew 24:6-8: "You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains."

He is speaking to us through revelation, and teaching through suffering. When we are at our lowest, most helpless, we become most teachable. Notice that Jesus said "but see to it that you are not alarmed."

2 Chronicles 7:14 says, "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

And in Revelation 21:4, John said, "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

God is here with outstretched arms. And to those who have accepted His grace, they can expect to receive His promise.

God Whispers

"The man whispered, "God, speak to me" and a meadowlark sang. But, the man did not hear.

So the man yelled, "God, speak to me" and the thunder rolled across the sky. But, the man did not listen.

The man looked around and said, "God let me see you." And a star shined brightly. But the man did not see.

So, the man cried out in despair, "Touch me God, and let me know you are here." Whereupon, God reached down and touched the man. But, the man brushed the butterfly away and walked on."

This past weekend, I went camping with my son in the Ocala National Forest.  There is only one other place on earth where the stars shine brighter (Dennis, you know of where I speak). The air was brisk, and the fire, warm. Each morning we woke to the Whippoorwill, and the birds of song. Our pleasures were simple - black coffee perked over the morning fire. Roasted marshmallows in the evening. Quiet time in a canoe, a five pound bass that would not bite, and watching the otters play.

This weekend I heard God whispering. Saw him shining. And felt his touch. Thank you Lord, for simple pleasures and your quiet voice.

Tempting

He brought shame, guilt and the penalty of death in the garden. He tempted Job to curse God. He tempted David with Bathsheba. He tempted Jesus in the desert. He desired to sift Peter as wheat. He is a liar and a thief, yet we fall for his temptations time and again.

But the good news is:

"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."  – 1 Corinthians 10:13

The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy. Never let him come back and lie to you again.  Emmerce yourself in truth, and the truth will set you free.

The Butterfly Effect

The law of "Sensitive Dependence on Initial Conditions" contends, that a simple change at one place, can cause profound changes elsewhere in a complex system.  The butterfly effect is a metaphor for this theory.  The tiny changes in the atmosphere caused by the flapping wings of a butterfly, may set off a series of events that can ultimately create a hurricane.

Take a few minutes to watch Andy Andrews talk about the Butterfly Effect in the real world.

You will heard Andy talk about Joshua Chamberlain, Henry Wallace and George Washington Carver. But we as Christians know of a better example – Jesus Christ.  Where would the world be today, had God not sent his Son to die for our sins? Where would the world be tomorrow, had you not lived today?  The Butterfly Effect.  Never underestimate the value that your Christian walk is having on the world around you.

I Am a Christian

"We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.  I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.  For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it." – Romans 7:14-20

If Paul, the author of most of the New Testament, had these struggles, where does that leave us?  What does it mean to be a Christian, if we are so consumed by sin?  How much love must He have for us, that we are accepted as we are?  We are a mess, yet through Him, we are blessed.  Maya Angelou, in her poem "Christians," has found words much more eloquent than I could have written:

Christians - By Maya Angelou

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting "I'm clean livin'."
I'm whispering "I was lost,
Now I'm found and forgiven."

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble
and need Christ to be my guide.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak
And need His strength to carry on.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed
And need God to clean my mess.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible
But, God believes I am worth it.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain.
I have my share of heartaches
So I call upon His name.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner
Who received God's good grace, somehow!

I Am

"I AM" who I AM
"I AM" the bread of life
"I AM" the light of the world
"I AM" the door of the sheep
"I AM" the good shepherd
"I AM" the resurrection and the life
"I AM" the way, the truth and the life
"I AM" the true vine
"I AM" the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

God alone IS. And I am (we are) second.

Sheen and Dungy

"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?"  – Mark 8:36

Charlie Sheen was making about $2 million an episode for his role in "2-1/2 Men." At 20 episodes a year, he was doing very well for himself.  And as the star of the richest sitcom in TV history, Charlie had a tremendous platform from which to glorify God. Instead Charlie chose to snort cocaine, beat his wives, and have "epic" parties with prostitutes.  He currently has two girlfriends, both of whom now live with him.  Charlie has sold his soul to gain the world.

Tony Dungy spent 31 years in the NFL, first as a player, and then as a coach.  As a coach, Tony lays claim to a number of notable accomplishments. He was the youngest coach in the NFL at 25. The youngest coordinator at 28. The first NFL head coach to defeat all 32 teams in the league. And the first black coach to win a Super Bowl.

As a coach, Tony saw himself first as a teacher who put faith and family ahead of football.  He was a new breed of coach who possessed a "Quiet Strength," and taught his teams, by example, the power of prayer. Tony, an evangelical Christian, is souled out for Christ. He retired from the NFL at the pinnacle of his coaching career, to devote his life to God, his ministries, and mentoring young men.

Tony's powerful witness can be found on www.iamsecond.com and www.allprodad.com.  You will be tremendously rewarded by visiting both sites. I have also included a short video clip that offers an excellent insight to this true Christian role model:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL7QV8UNm58

Envy

The sinless life of Christ the King was lived in humility and servanthood. He fought for the least of these, and opposed the prideful. For this He was spat upon, scorned, beaten and crucified.  The ugliness that is envy and hatred, murdered Christ, most of his disciples, and has brought darkness to our world.

"Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love." – 1 John 4:8

The world teaches us to even the score, but Jesus teaches us to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:12). To live like Christ will make us easy targets, "but the one who endures to the end will be saved" (Matthew 10:22). When faced with hurt and hate, place it at the foot of the Cross, and let God deal with it.

"Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” – Romans 12:19-20

The Good Fight

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." – 2 Timothy 4:7
Your faith is not proven by how you begin the race, but by enduring and finishing strong. Look at Paul.  His Christian walk was anything but easy. But with all he endured; persecution, beatings, betrayal, testing, a thorn in his flesh and imprisonment, Paul's focus remained on Jesus Christ.  And in the end, he died for Him.
Live your life as did Paul, learning to be content in all circumstances through Christ. And when you are called home, you can go knowing that you have fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith!”

To My Son

"And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”  –  Acts 9:17 (New King James Version)

When Paul received his sight, he also received spiritual sight. At this point, Saul became Paul, and his life and preaching was consumed with Jesus Christ." Paul never again allowed anything hold the attention of his mind and soul except for Christ.

Through Paul, we learn that we must maintain a strong degree of character in our lives. A spiritual man knows what it means to have Jesus in his life. Whenever you see this quality in a person, you know he/she is a person after God's own heart (Acts 13:22 ).

Ty, buddy, never allow anything to take your eyes from Christ. It is the true test of the condition of your heart. To lose Christ in your heart means that things of this world have become your god.  Always give God your whispering thoughts, and always give Him your waiting thoughts.

Three

I have long been intrigued by the recurring use of numbers in the Bible.  Noah had three sons, Job had three daughters. Moses and Aaron petitioned Pharaoh, "Now let us take a three-day journey..." Daniel regularly prayed three times a day. Paul stayed in Ephesus for three months. Jonah spent three days and three nights in the stomach of a big fish. For three days Saul was without site. Jesus rose from the dead on the third day. And the core of our faith is based on the Triune – the Father, Son and Holy Spirit." In fact, three is mentioned in the Bible 543 times.

"Three" in the Bible denotes divine perfection.

Recently, while sifting through files of saved email, seeking inspiration for A Brand New Day, I found an email entitled "Three Things."  Marcy sent it to me on October 10, 2006.  It reads as follows:

Three  things in life that, once gone, never come back:
1.  Time
2.  Words
3.  Opportunity

Three things in life  that can destroy a person:
1.  Anger
2.  Pride
3.  Unforgiveness

Three things in life that you should never lose:
1.  Hope
2.  Peace
3.  Honesty

Three things in life  that are most valuable:
1.  Love
2.  FFF (Faith, Family & Friends )
3.  Kindness

Three things in life that are never certain:
1.  Fortune
2.  Success
3.  Dreams

Three things that make a person:
1.  Commitment
2.  Sincerity
3.  Hard work

Three things  that are truly constant:
Father - Son -  Holy Spirit

I  ask the Lord to bless you, as I pray for you today; to guide you and  protect you, as you go along your way. God's love is always with you, God's promises are true. And when you give God all your cares, you know God will see you through.

Thank you Marcy.

Change

"Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." – Romans 12:2 (NLT)

My brother-in-law, Rick, was caught up in the government takeover of General Motors, and subsequently took the buyout.  After 30+ years, he was jobless, angry and perhaps a little bitter.  Reflecting on his bitterness, Rick says, the true source of his outrage was the loss of status that came with his career.

I really admire Rick for what he did next:  At the age of 50, he went back to college to become a nurse.

Today Rick does not have a job, but a life's mission – helping people in need.  His anger has given way to a fire, a passion that now burns within.  Rick's new life of serving, is now serving a much greater purpose. And everyday, he sees his reward in the eyes of those he comforts. In taking away Rick's 30-year career, God forced the extraordinary change in Rick's life. A change that he now embraces.

I'm very proud of you bro!

Burdens

"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."  – Galatians 6:2

God places people in our lives for two reasons: that they may learn the depths of His love through us, or, that we may learn the depths of His love through them. He is aware of what they lack, or what we may need. God does nothing by accident. When He places you, immediately go to Him in prayer, “You put me here for a reason. You knew this was going to happen. What do want to do through me that would help this person become closer to You?”

Recognizing a need in someone’s life can be one of the greatest invitations from God you will ever experience. Allow God to help you see beyond the obvious, to the things He wants to accomplish, and the lessons that He wants you to learn.

Is God blessing you financially? It may be He is developing a “depot” through which He can provide for others. Has God granted you a strong, family life? He may need your home to minister to a hurting family. Has God’s peace comforted you in a time of sorrow? It may be that He has opened you to experiences, so that you can now go and carry the burdens of others.

Have you ever asked yourself, "why have I been so blessed?" Watch this short video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ko_VSKn1DAE
